Here’s How It Works
Advanced Language & Literature is divided Into two main sections:
Opening Chapters Scaffolded Skills Instruction
These skill-building instructional chapters lay the

groundwork for the skills students will develop and
Chapter 2 – Understanding Literature master throughout the course. These chapters use very
brief accessible texts to introduce, model, and practice
Chapter 3 – Understanding Argument fundamental academic skills. Those skills include:

Chapter 4 – Understanding Inquiry and · how to conduct an academic conversation
Evidence-Based Argument · how to read a text for a variety of purposes
· how to work with literature of a variety of genres
· how to analyze and use rhetoric and argument strategies
· how to conduct an inquiry and investigate an issue
· how to work with sources and use evidence persuasively
Thematic Chapters Balancing Nonfiction and Literature
The thematic chapters alternate focus between nonfiction
Chapter 5 – Changing the World and literature, to keep your course balanced while helping
(nonfiction) students deepen mastery and practice the skills introduced
Chapter 6 – Self Discovery (literature) in the opening chapters.
Chapter 7 – The Individual in School Spiraling Skills Throughout the Book
(nonfiction) To deepen mastery of the skills introduced in the opening
chapter, each thematic chapter has an integrated Skill
Chapter 8 – Cultures, Conflicts, and Focus with three components:
