New York Times photographer Todd Heisler said, %u201cOn television, the sounds and the cutouts gave the illusion of a sense of normalcy. But being there in person only seemed to make the lack of fans more pronounced.%u201dArtist Suzanne Firstenberg%u2019s memorial to the victims of COVID-19, entitled %u201cIN AMERICA How Could this Happen?,%u201d was installed in Washington, D.C. Photographed here by Roberto Schmidt, the memorial had a flag for every death recorded prior to and during its installation. Volunteers helped tag and collect flags, some of which were personalized by family or friends.
