QUESTIONS 2004 Democratic National Convention Speech Barack Obama  Barack Obama (b. 1961) served as the 44th president of the United States, making him the first Black person to hold that office. He graduated from Columbia University and then Harvard Law School, where he was president of the Harvard Law Review . He taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago before serving as Illinois state senator, U.S. senator, and ultimately U.S. president. In 2009, President Obama was named the Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Since his presidency, he published a third memoir, A Promised Land(2020). He has also explored American issues in documentary form, winning an Emmy for his series Our Great National Parks (2022). KEY CONTEXT Obama was running for his first term in the U.S. Senate when he delivered the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in July 2004, which nominated John Kerry to run against George W. Bush. Showcasing his skills as an orator in front of a national audience, this speech brought Obama national attention. He was elected to the presidency in 2008 and served two terms in office.
