While his art is recognized and loved around the world today, during his lifetime van Gogh achieved little success and also suffered from mental illness. He made this 1889 painting, Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear , after his release from the hospital in Arles, where he had been committed after he had cut off his ear. 1.
