This feature provides ways to challenge well-prepared students and engage reluctant readers by giving them the opportunity to explore how the ideas of a piece connect with real-world issues and other texts. FPO725Extending Beyond the Text Vincent van Gogh (1853%u20131890) left his working-class home in the Netherlands in 1886 to find freedom of expression and inspiration in France. While his art is recognized and loved around the world today, during his lifetime van Gogh achieved little success and also suffered from mental illness. He made this 1889 painting, Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear , after his release from the hospital in Arles, where he had been committed after he had cut off his ear.  1.
