The Silent Generation  The Silent Generation consists of people born between 1928 and 1945 (the end of World War II). The origin of the term is generally attributed to the political cautiousness of its members. This generation lived through the Great Depression of the 1930s and the  Second World War and is relatively small because people had fewer children in those difficult times. The Silent Generation values hard work and tends to be frugal (%u201cwaste not, want not%u201d) and averse to debt. They follow rules, consider law and order important, and Social Generations in the United States 8-2 What are the major social generations in the United States?  Have you heard the terms Baby Boomer, Gen Xer, and millennial? These are the names given to social generations in the United States and some other parts of the world. The news media uses these terms frequently as they report on fashion and entertainment choices, marriage trends, and job markets.  Generations are groups of people who were born around the same time and possess some common traits due to the cultural and societal influences they shared as they grew up. Demographers use the term cohorts for such groups of people. There are five well-recognized generational cohorts in the United States and other parts of the world, though each cohort%u2019s starting and ending years may differ slightly depending on the sources of information.
