                                    About the Authors  Scott F. Abernathy University of Minnesota  Scott F. Abernathy is a University Distinguished Teaching  Professor and an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Minnesota. He is also the author of two books on education policy %u2014 School Choice and the Future of American Democracy and No Child Left Behind and the  Public Schools %u2014 both from University of Michigan Press. At the  undergraduate level, Scott has taught Introduction to American Government, Education Policy, and Religion and American  Politics courses and has won numerous teaching awards. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Minnesota, Scott worked as a fourth- and seventh-grade public school teacher in Wisconsin and as an on-street counselor for young adults experiencing homelessness in Boston, Massachusetts. Karen has served as a reader for the AP %u00ae U.S. Government and Politics Exam, as well as the AP %u00ae U.S. History Exam,%u00a0and she has served as a reader, table leader, question leader, and exam leader for the AP %u00ae Comparative Government and%u00a0 Politics Exam. She is an endorsed consultant for the College Board %u00aeand conducts%u00a0 AP %u00ae U.S. Government and Politics and AP %u00ae %u00a0 Comparative Government and Politics workshops and  institutes throughout the country. Karen was the chair of the College Board %u00ae Social Science Academic Advisory Committee and was a member of the Curriculum Redesign Committee for AP %u00ae U.S. Government and Politics. She received the Colorado Governor%u2019s Award for Excellence in Education in 1997 and was recognized as a Cherry Creek High School Teacher of the Year in 2002.
