Adulthood and Aging MODULE 12 197%u2022 Age of self-focus%u2014deciding who to be with, where to go, and what to do without being concerned about parental restrictions (or the constraints of a family).%u2022 Age of feeling between%u2014even though you%u2019re taking responsibility for your decisions, you still don%u2019t feel like an adult.%u2022 Age of possibilities%u2014full of optimism, emerging adults believe they will live better than their parents and will find a soul mate.Consider my friends Isaac and Aliyah, who are 25 years old and married. While changing careers and moving from one state to another, Isaac and Aliyah made an 8-month stopover at his parents%u2019 home to prepare for their new jobs and to save money for rent in their new city. Isaac and Aliyah would like to have children someday, but they don%u2019t yet feel settled enough to be parents. Isaac and Aliyah aren%u2019t unique. Antonio, another friend of mine, is 34 and has a good job, but he still brings laundry to his parents%u2019 home on the weekends. He also relies on their financial assistance periodically to make ends meet. Isaac, Aliyah, and Antonio are increasingly common examples of the changing social clock in Western cultures. They aren%u2019t adolescents, but they have not quite made the complete transition into adulthood.Staying Home LongerThe high cost of education and housing makes it much harder for young people to move out on their own than it was for previous generations. Many continue to live with parents while paying off student loans or saving to buy their own place.DGLimages/ShutterstockMAKE IT STICK!1.
