AP ® ACTIVITY IDENTIFYING AN ARGUMENT
Louis wrote his memoir specifically to give his son advice about how to rule France. In
a few sentences, summarize the lessons that Louis hoped his son would learn from his
account of how he used spectacle during his reign.

                        FURTHER ACTIVITY
Primary sources are often difficult to read because they include words that are no longer
commonly used or had a different meaning in the past. They also often incorporate long
sentences with unfamiliar or little used grammatical constructions. Louis’s memoir is an
example of this. In this activity, your job is to update Louis’s language. Rewrite one or
more of Louis’s paragraphs in modern English that would be easy for another student to
read and understand. Note any difficulties that you have. Are you concerned that any of
your translation might not fully convey what Louis XIV meant?
