American interior [support with evidence]. The French
dependence on the Mississippi and St. Lawrence Rivers and
the British dependence on the Atlantic led to their different
settlement patterns [explain].
Now you’re ready to answer A and B. When you do, be sure to present each answer
with a claim that is supported by evidence. Let’s use the second two examples from
the chart above:
(A) Both the British and the French settled large land areas in North America
[claim]. The French took over much of what would become Canada and
explored down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico, while the British
colonies ranged from as far north as New England down to the borders of
Spanish Florida [support with evidence]. The large land area of British and
French settlement represents a similarity between them [explain].
(B) The French settled the northeastern and central portions of North America, whereas
the British tended to settle along the eastern seaboard [claim]. Because of English
settlement along the eastern seaboard, the French dominated the St. Lawrence River
and most of Canada, whereas the British, dependent upon Atlantic trade and crop
production, settled along the Atlantic Ocean [support with evidence]. The French
settlements in the far north and the British settlements along the eastern seaboard
represent a difference between the French and British settlement patterns [explain].
Step 3 Explain historical information related to the economies of the French and
British colonies in North America based on their settlement patterns
Now you’re ready to tackle part C, which requires you to know something about one
of these empire’s economies, and to explain how that economic system was related to
information in the map.
Let’s use our second set of examples again from our list above. We already estab-
lished that both the British and the French settled large areas, and each settled along
different waterways. Let’s choose the French for our explanation of how settlement
patterns shaped that empire’s economy in North America:
(C) The French depended on trade in furs, which were abundant in French North
America [claim]. They transported these furs along the river systems of North
America, which gave them access to overseas trade [support with evidence].
This fur trade shaped the French colonial economy in North America by creating
a colony less dependent on trade in cash crops than the British [explain].
ACTIVITY
Now, using the same map, answer A, B, and C on your own. Feel free to use the chart
above to help you. For part C, explain how British settlement patterns shaped that
empire’s economy in North America. Be sure that each of your responses makes a
claim and provides evidence to support that claim.
