                                      Step 1    Break down the prompts
                                                Notice that each of the prompts in this question asks you to do ONE thing. In the first
                                                (A), you must identify one similarity between the settlement patterns of the British
                                                and the French. In the second (B), you must identify one difference. And in the third
                                                (C), you must explain how the settlement patterns of either the British or the French
                                                shaped the economics of that empire in North America. In A, B, and C, you need to
                                                make a claim, support that claim with evidence, and explain how your evidence
                                                supports your claim (CSE).

                                      Step 2    List and categorize relevant information from the secondary source

                                                As with all AP  questions that include a stimulus (a map, image, graph, chart, or
                                                written text), you will have to both understand the stimulus and apply your histor-
                                                ical knowledge to answer the question. In the case of this SAQ, notice that the map
                                                shows you both where in North America the French and British settled, and around
                                                what geographic features both settled. This information will take you a long way to
                                                answering parts A and B, because comparing each requires only an understanding
                                                of the map. Your list of similarities and differences might look something like this:
