for each section of the AP Exam in an AP Skills Workshop. As the book progresses,

practice in the middle of the book, and then finally, to independent practice near the end
of the year.
Periods 1–3: Focused Instruction. The first three periods of the textbook
provide step-by-step support as they teach students how to think critically about
historical developments and processes. Students put that thinking to work by
learning to answer stimulus-based multiple-choice questions, short-answer
questions with and without primary and secondary sources, construct thesis
statements, and craft well-supported body paragraphs. This prepares students for
the more complex set of skills taught in Periods 4–6.
Periods 4–6: Guided Practice. In the second portion of the book, the instruction
moves to guided writing practice as students deepen their understanding and apply
new writing skills to outlining essays, answering Long-Essay and Document-Based
Questions, and composing responses that demonstrate a complex and sophisticated
historical understanding.
Period 7–9: Independent Practice. The last third of the book shifts to indepen-
dent practice in the run-up to the exam. In this part of the textbook, the workshops
assess students’ command of their historical understanding, newly developed skills,
preparedness for the exam, and ability to produce college-level writing.
Fabric of a Nation was designed to provide you and your students everything needed to

succeed in the AP U.S. History course and on the exam. It’s all there.

mini-AP Exam with roughly 15 stimulus-based Multiple-Choice Questions, 4 Short-

a full-length practice exam is included at the end of the textbook. Because the periods

and Topic Questions, while the AP Exam Practice at the end of each period can be sup-

plemented with the Personal Progress Checks from AP Classroom.
