A Strong Focus on Nonfiction Nurtures Critical Thinking Skills
The study of nonfiction is vital, not just for academic success in all academic fields, but
in helping students learn how to process information critically and respond thoughtfully.
That’s why the readings chapters include ones centered on nonfiction modes (narrative,
argument, and exposition) right alongside the traditional literary genres of fiction, poetry,
drama, and mythology. There are also thematic Conversations in every chapter, which
are primarily nonfiction, tied to the Central Text.
Differentiated Texts Support Targeted Instruction
Each genre/mode chapter has three text sections of increasing complexity that allow
you to tailor curricular choices to students’ needs and interests — while keeping
students exploring the same genre or mode and developing the same skills. With
several texts per chapter, you and your students will have a wide range of choice.
Section 1 / Foundational: These entry-
level texts are brief, high-interest, and
relatively straightforward in their content,
context, and structure.

Section 2 / Grade-Level: These texts
represent a level of complexity that a
ninth-grade student should reasonably be
able to read and analyze with a bit of
teacher support and additional context.
This section always includes a Central
Text , a particularly rich exemplar of the
genre or mode that is the focus of the
chapter.
Section 3 / Challenging: The most
challenging texts in each chapter, these
texts have rich language, sophisticated
ideas, or unfamiliar contexts. These texts
approach the level of challenge seen in
®
later grades, including AP English
classes.
